Guelder Rose
Viburnum Opulus
This comes in the category of small tree/shrub reaching a height around 10 to 12 feet. The leaves are segmented into three. It is related to the Elder and is therefore sometimes called Red or Rose Elder. Like the Elder, it produces small white flowers formed in flat-topped clusters. The berries that follow, however, differ greatly. They are deep red in colour and though edible are too bitter to eat directly. This plant may also be referred to as Cranberrybush as they have been used as a substitute.
This is a good year round plant as the flowers create an impressive display in spring to early summer and the berries create autumn interest.
It likes sun to partial shade. In England it can be found along hedgerows etc., though it is rarer in other parts of the UK.
