Rose (sweetbriar)
Rosa Rubiginosa
For general info, compare this with the Dog Rose. The sweetbrier varies in that its flowers are smaller and of a deeper colour than other varieties. Both stems and leaves have a reddish-brown hue and it has its own fragrance in the foliage itself. This scent is described as 'refreshing' as in the case of most wild roses but this is particularly sweet and carries some distance. Strangely, the blooms tend to be almost scentless.
It can be found in England along hedgerows and was once used medicinally.
