Cowslip
Primula Veris

The origin of the name is unclear but may be a distortion of an Anglo-Saxon word referring to Cow's 'Leek' meaning plant. Cowslip belongs to the Primula or 'Primulaceae' family, which includes a variety of flowers besides the Cowslip and Primrose, all valued as having some medicinal properties.

It is a well-known wildflower, found throughout English meadows. However, this plant is in decline, although not obviously so as there are many varieties. Leaves begin to appear in spring, followed by stalk growth. The central stalk grows to a height of approximately 10 to 15cm, from which smaller stalks may appear, and blossoms with clusters of yellow bells in spring usually in the months of May through to June, rising from a spiral of leaves situated at the ground. It is a vital food for numerous butterflies. The fragrance is fresh.

Like many wildflowers this can be planted throughout the year, though take a note to keep watered if planted in summer. Try to plant small clusters to create a drift effect.

This plant has been used to make Cowslip Wine, and the flowers have at times been eaten in certain dishes and preserves. Its medicinal values have been attributed to alleviating headaches and insomnia (Cowslip wine in particular being approved as a sedative!). It's also been said to be good for memory and ailments such as rheumatism. People once also thought it was good for the skin, particularly with regards to the complexion and would wash their faces in water or cream preparations in the hope of fading wrinkles. More realistically, such creams were used for sunburn, though alas many were made from a combination of the plant and animal fats.
