Hoary Cinquefoil
Potentilla argentea
Rather amusingly Potentilla means 'little powerful one'. The 'little' refers to size but the powerful is a reference to the plant's medicinal uses. Argentea simply means silvery and indeed this plant is sometimes called Silvery or Silver Cinquefoil.
This perennial grows in height up to 24 inches. It has graceful stems and blossoms of small yellow golden flowers. It blooms usually around mid summer in July. The foliage has a silvery, shiny hue, making it especially attractive.
Prune back if it becomes a little overhung in growth. Some say pruning after its first flower may encourage it to re-flower later in the year. It can cope with partial shade but is ideal for full sun.
