Creeping Cinquefoil
Potentilla repans
Perhaps amusingly, the word Potentilla means little powerful one - little as in size and powerful in regard to its medicinal uses. It is a slightly more fragile form of Hoary or 'Silver' Cinquefoil though the plants can be easily distinguished by inspection of the leaves. It may be called 'Five Fingers', which refers to the division of the leaves.
The stems are long, reaching as much as 5 feet in length and trailing, 'creeping' over the ground to cover a wide area. The green leaves are by and large 'divided' into 5, though in some cases you may find 6 or 7 of these divisions. The flowers are bright yellow and bloom from May to September. It likes open ground with sufficient sun and therefore can be found in fields and meadows; it may even be found amongst sand dunes.
This plant was used in the Middle Ages mainly in forms of 'magic' and spells. In fact, like many potentilla this plant has strong medicinal properties and has been used to help reduce fever, and many types of infection. It has been listed as easing pain such as toothache and sore throats. See Tormentil for more details of the wonderful healing properties of this family of plants.
