Prunella Vulgaris
Prunella originates from a misspelling of a German word, relating to curing properties. Vulgaris refers to common as in easily found, and indeed is widespread throughout Europe.
A perennial, this plant is sometimes used in alpines and rock gardens. It is found by the roadside and in fields, on wasteland and any open situations, as well as natural set gardens and appreciates sun to partial shade. It tends to have an exceedingly long bloom period, as it flowers repeatedly from May through to September. The flowers are purple, with some reddish purple tones at the base, produced in dense, cylindrical clusters. It has a square stem that grows to a height of approximately 6 to 12 inches.
Selfheal is aromatic and loved by birds, butterflies and bees so is ideal for creating a habitat, though best to plant in a contained area where it will not crowd other plants.
The common name for this plant actually comes from its herbal properties; it has been used to treat many conditions, but mostly ailments relating to the mouth and throat. It is well respected by herbalists.
