Wild Angelica
Angelica Syvestris

Angelica translates to 'like an Angel'. Syvestris means growing in/of the wild/woods.

This plant grows to a height of 6 to 8 feet. Its blooms are nearly white, though may have some pink/purple tones. It flowers in late summer/early autumn. This variety has a hairy stalk and likes full sun. Take care when handling as can cause some skin irritation. It may require some watering as does not like to completely dry out.

It is called a 'biennial' due to its growth pattern. It needs to reach maturity to seed and grow, so there may be fewer flowers in its second year. It should fully establish around its third year.

Many parts of the Angelica plant family can be used. It likes moist places and sun but has been found in many cold regions. There are approximately 30 varieties of the species. The larger form of Angelica, known as Archangelica, or officinalis, or 'garden' can be found in great quantity in the London area, having sown itself yearly, and this is used to make the candied stems that we all know so well. It is also imported for this purpose. Wild Angelica, as featured here, is used to make a yellow dye.

Forms of the Angelica plant has been used throughout history for medicinal purposes, treating many ailments, including those dealing with the blood, including poisoning. It has some pagan and Christian associations, and was often used in times of festival.
