Origanum Vulgare
Origanum means Mountain Joy, deriving from the two greek words oros and ganos. Vulgare means common as in commonly found. It may also be known under the species of oregano, or as winter marjoram or even mountain mint.
This perennial herb originates in the wild of Mediterranean areas. It is used for its leaves and its essential oil.
It grows to a height of 12 to 18 inches and prefers full sun. The stems are quite 'woody', and branched. It is strongly aromatic and blooms in mid to late summer with pink to purplish flowers. It is generally easy to grow. The flowers are attractive to butterflies and bees. It is a welcome edition to any herb garden: like most Marjoram and Oregano that have extensive culinary uses. It has a pleasant yet slight bitter taste that enhances many dishes.
This family of plants also have a high reputation medicinally. Throughout history, and especially by the Greeks, it has been used to treat ailments both internal and external. Greeks also believe it is a good omen if it grows on a gravesite and it has been used to crown newlyweds. Medically, this family is especially known for the treatment of colds. When used as a 'tea' the antiseptic qualities can help sooth a sore throat, and can be used to gargle or rinse out the mouth for all inflammations and ulcers. It is also believed it can aid coughs, headaches, upset stomachs and even menstrual cramps.
