Prairie Cone Flower
Ratibida Columnfera
Ratibida refers to a variety of plants named after Constantine Rafinesque-Schmaltz, who was a botanist. He was known for naming plants with words that had inexplicable significance. Columnfera means 'column'.
This is a very similar plant to the Mexican Hat. It has slender stems and fine leaves, but the central 'conical' shape is less pronounced and the petals tend to 'droop'. It has a larger variety of colour, both in the central 'conical' cone and in the petals, displaying variations of gold, yellow, red and orange tones.
It flowers from June through to September. It likes full sun and is a durable plant.
