Tall Verbena
Verbena Bonariensis
Verbena is actually derived from the word Vervain. Linguistically, Verbena is Italian and Spanish in origin. For European purposes, this may be referred to as Vervain (meaning Enchanter's Plant or Holy Herb, among others), though in actuality that is a different plant. Bonariensis is even more unusual, meaning from Buenos Aires.
This plant may grow as much as 6 feet in height. It stands erect, with widely branched stems. It is airy in appearance and produces small clustered lilac/purple flowers that bloom from July into the autumn.
It is good for the middle of a mixed border, though self-seeds unless you deadhead so take care if you don't wish it to be invasive. The leaves can be a bit prickly; don't plant too close to a path.
It is most attractive when planted in groups. It likes full sun. It can be tolerant of drought. It can be found by roadsides and often on wasteland and open pastures. It is highly attractive to some birds, butterflies and bees.
