Wild Basil
Clinapodium Vulgare
Clinapodium has the strange meaning of 'bedfoot' - this is a reference to the plant's appearance but is generally thought obscure. Vulgare means common, as in commonly found. It may also be referred to as Hedge Basil, or under the Latin name Clinopodium Calamintha. This plant is a member of the Mint family.
It grows to a height usually between 6 to 12 inches and when in flower from July to September, it produces blooms that are a rosy-purple colour. The foliage is soft in texture. Its scent may be a little like thyme.
It can be found growing wild by the side of the road and in fields. It likes full sun to partial shade.
Its flavour is more subtle than the basil we usually prefer. It has been used as an infusion for a weak stomach.
