Flax
Linum Ustitatissimum
For Linum, simply think of Flax, Linen, Cloth. Ustitatissimum is a reference to the usefulness of the plant. It may be known as Common Flax or Linseed among others.
This plant will grow to various heights from 1 to 4 feet high. The flowers are a light to mid violet-blue and it blooms any time from mid summer into August. In appearance, it stands erect and is elegant. It likes full sun to partial shade.
This plant has been used medicinally. However, please note that used incorrectly it can result in respiratory failure and death. This may seem a little ironic when it has been used to treat such conditions like bronchitis and may be found in cough medicines, but like many things it is all in the preparation. Do not allow livestock to consume this plant though the oil may be found in treatments specified by a vet. Linseed oil is a great resource in the treatment of such things as gallstones and it is widely used in the paint and vanish trade. It has been used as a poultice for infections and rheumatism. Certain treatments are meant to detoxify the body.
This plant is the source for the fibres that are used to make linen and as been so for thousands of years. It created the cloth used to wrap mummies found in Egyptian tombs and the reference to 'fine linen' in the Bible was proven to be produced from Flax. It has been used to make sails and was in fact the white sails Homer referred to in the Odyssey. Darwin studied it.
