Vervain
Verbena Officinals
Verbena is actually derived from the word Vervain. Linguistically, Verbena is Italian and Spanish in origin. For European purposes, this is referred to as Vervain (meaning Enchanter's Plant or Holy Herb, among others). In French, it is called Verveine.
This plant may grow up to approximately 3 feet in height. It is classed as an herb, though perfect for use as a wild flower. When used as an herb, it is gathered before the flowers appear. It is slender in appearance and produces small flowers, blue/lilac/purple in colour that bloom from July into the autumn. The stalk is woody.
It is most attractive when planted in groups, as otherwise it can look too thin and be over-looked, though it is delightful for the flowers. It likes full sun/partial shade. It can be tolerant of drought.
Throughout history, it has been regarded as a scared plant. As an herbal remedy, it has a sedative quality and is used as a relaxant to aid variously levels of depression. It eases tension as well as strengthens the nervous system, and is therefore often used in recuperation following colds and flu. In some cases, it may help conditions such as insomnia, asthma and migraine, due to its relaxant qualities. It has also been used on conditions such as jaundice, liver complaints, and to treat infections, particularly of the mouth but also on bites, sores, and wounds. It should be avoided during pregnancy, though it is said it may be taken during labour to aid contractions.
