Sweet Vernal Grass
Anthoxanthum Ordortum
Anthoxantum derives from two Greek words: anthos, meaning flower and xanthum, being a reference to 'yellow'. Ordortum, unsurprisingly, refers to the fragrance of this plant, which may be referred to as 'Vanilla' Grass. It particularly has a strong vanilla scent when dried that is especially long-lasting. It is generally described as the scent of freshly mown hay.
This ornamental grass grows up to approximately 2 feet in height. It has a compact, clustered appearance, with 'tufted' slender stems - it bears 'spikes' of a yellow 'grain' from sometime in April to August. It is one of the first to flower early. The foliage is yellow-green.
It can be found by the roadside, in open fields and pastures, and on waste ground. It requires full sun. It can tolerate drought.
Plant with care if you suffer from asthma or hay fever. However, a remedy can ironically also be procured from this plant for hay fever sufferers. Though it smells sweet it is highly unpleasant to taste.
