Crested Dog's Tail
Cynosurus Cristatus
Cynosurus derives from two Greek words: kynos meaning dog and oura meaning tail. Cristatus simply means crested. This is an ornamental grass.
This perennial grows up to 18 inches in height. In appearance, it is leafier at the base.
It may bloom as early as late spring but expect seeded green 'spikelets' from June to early September. It has an eye-catching appearance.
In the wild, it can often be found on open grassland. It can cope with a good range of soils and can withstand dry conditions as well as cold temperatures. Horses seem to like it and though it may not be very nutritional, it certainly does them no harm.
