Tufted Hairgrass
Deschampsia Caesitosa
This plant is named after a French Naturalist - Louis Deschamps - who lived in the 19th Century. The word Caesitosa simply refers to the plant's tufted appearance.
This ornamental grass grows usually around 3 foot high but some have reported this plant growing up to 8 foot in height though this is more unusual! It may bloom anytime from as early as mid spring into the autumn with purple-green flowers that are good for gathering. They may be used as a fresh cut flower or dried, though this plant is grown mainly for its foliage. The flowers have hair-like bristles, which gives this plant its common name of 'hairgrass'. The edges of the leaves can be sharp so be careful when choosing where to plant and handle with gloves.
Plant singularly or in large groupings for a spectacular and natural display. It prefers sun with some partial shade. It can be found in the wild along sand or rocky coasts, in low, damp situations, marshes, and elevated locations.
