Elytrigia Repens
The word repens refers to creeping and this plant can spread and be invasive so plant with care. Sea Couch may also be known as Couchgrass, Twitchgrass, Quackgrass or Doggrass.
It is a perennial growing 1 to 3 feet in height. It blooms repeatedly throughout the year but has no particular colour to speak of but may have yellow 'tips'.
It can tolerate sun or shade. In the wild, it is abundant in fields and on waste ground. It is generally found in wet places, such as marshes, along the coast and around sand dunes - in such areas it can be useful as it binds the sand and helps prevent shifting.
Below ground, it has a creeping stem, which extends some distance in any direction, allowing further branching to appear. It is virtually impossible to eradicate once established so for a domestic environment plant in a self-contained area. Planting closely-grouped grasses, which compact the soil - for it prefers a 'loose' environment - may destroy it. However, it is not correct to regard the plant as a weed. In many countries, the roots are used as food for livestock and even sold in markets. The taste is similar to liquorice and sweet. It was once valuable as a treatment for pets and humans and is still used as such in some countries.
