This is a short ornamental grass. It grows approximately 6 inches in height. It blooms throughout April and is especially attractive at this time. The 'flowers' are speared, 'tufted' clusters of seeds. They have yellow tufted tips, and the main seed is a brownish colour with purple tones. The rest of the year it is quite unassuming.

In the wild, it can be found abundantly in many forms of turf. It is a good choice for open situations and damp sites.
