Wild Strawberry
Fragaria Vesca
The word Fragaria is from the Latin for Strawberry. Vesca refers to small or thin. Maybe surprisingly, this is part of the rose family of plants. The origins of the word Strawberry is often believed to come from the practice of putting straw beneath the plant to ripen the fruit. However, this is quite wrong as the name is even more ancient than that and derives from 'strew'. This is a reference to the tangled appearance of the vines and the way they cover the ground.
This plant produces very small strawberries. Some people choose not to pick them because of their size, or because they prefer leaving them for wildlife, though they can be fun to 'nibble'. It blossoms early and throughout the summer. The flowers are white and quite pretty as are the leaves, which divide into three, oval, sharply serrated leafs. It has a delicate fragrance.
This plant is often used for ground cover. It's low and spreading so be aware as you may want to keep the area it covers contained. The height is around 6 to 9 inches or lower. It prefers some shade.
Strawberries do have some medicinal value. Both the fruit and the leaves have been so used. The plant contains water, sugar, pectin, and citric acid, among other things. It has been used to aid diarrhoea, to cure gout, and for cosmetic purposes.
