Valerian
Valeriana Officianlis
Both Valeriana and Officianlis refer to the curative properties of the plant, translating roughly as strong
and official. It may also be known as All-heal or Great Wild Valerian. The origins of this are arguable - some say it derives from Valere - the Latin word referring to health.
This perennial can grow up to 6 feet in height. It produces small flowers when it blooms in mid summer. The flowers are usually white though may appear pale pink, and form as clusters on upright stems. It is a fragrant plant, reminiscent of vanilla or almonds. This smell is not so attractive, however, if the plant is bruised - so do not be alarmed to encounter this if cutting back. The foliage is a rich green.
It likes full sun or partial shade but does not like to dry out so needs to be monitored for watering. However, it does not like to be over-watered or boggy ground. Just keep moist but the damper the soil the taller it tends to grow.
The plants will self-seed once established. Dead-head to prevent spreading if need be. It can do well in a
suitable container.
In the wild, it can be found growing in meadows, along the road and in some wetlands, even near rivers or in ditches.
Its medicinal uses are various. It is a good sedative and has been used to treat migraine and insomnia. It has also been used for certain types of epilepsy and nervous disorders. It helps to relieve pain. However, overuse or too large a dose can have the opposite affect. It has been used to treat human and animals alike. Be aware that cats are especially fond of it and may roll on it.
