Water Avens
Geum Rivale
Geum is a Latin name and Rivale refers to its tendency to grow by rivers and streams. It may also be
known as Cure-all or Nodding or Drooping Avens.
This is quite a sturdy plant. This perennial can grow up to approximately 1 foot in height. The flowers are
white, pink to brownish purple, and orange-red and it blooms from late spring into the summer. It has
fewer flowers than some but they are very attractive, forming bell-shaped nodding flowers on erect stems
that stand higher than the leaves. The seed heads are fuzzy. The foliage is a mid to dark green and the
trefoil leaves are like velvet to the touch.
It likes full sun or partial shade. It loves moist places so is perfect for a water feature or pond area and is
a very eye-catching addition.
In the wild, it can be found growing like crazy in most moist areas, such as rivers, canals, in woodland, in
some wetlands, or in ditches.
Its medicinal uses are varied - it has been used to treat diarrhoea and other bowel and stomach ailments.
It has also been used to help stop haemorrhaging.
