Yellow Loosestrife
Lysimachia Vulgaris
Lysimachia is the name of a (Sicilian) king who reported discovered the medicinal uses of this plant.
Vulgaris means common as in often found. This may also be known as Garden Loosestrife, Willow-wort
or Yellow Willow. NB: Purple Loosestrife is also available but is not of the same family: see listings. The
plants are completely unrelated. Yellow Loosestrife belongs to the same family as the Primrose.
This plant usually grows around two to three feet in height. It blooms from the middle of summer through
to end of the season, and on occasion into the autumn. The flowers appear on erect 'spears' but the
individual flowers in the clusters are bigger than those of Purple Loosestrife. The flowers are bell-shaped
and a rich buttery to golden yellow, especially lovely in July and August. It may, however, need some time
to establish before blooms appear. It has no odour.
This plant likes full sun to partial shade.
Some consider this invasive, though generally reports say that pruning controls growth. It is not the same
plant as the Purple one of the same name. The plant requires little care and many adore it. It has a
creeping root.
In the wild, it can be found growing by the side of streams. Medicinal uses have ranged from treating
stomach and throat disorders.
