Hesperis matronalis
Hesperis was a figure in Greek mythology and refers to the evening when this plant gives off a fragrant scent. In the daytime, however, it has no smell, and therefore is considered 'deceitful'. For Matronalis you can think, not unreasonably, of matrimony as it does indeed mean 'belonging to a married woman'. This plant may also be known as white or sweet rocket though note it is NOT the same thing as salad rocket, although in some countries the bitter tasting leaves may be used in salads.
Originally a native of Italy, it can now be found throughout many parts of Europe. It is quite a tall plant, having very erect stems that grow in height from 2 to 4 feet or more. Its flowers are white or lilac/purple
and bloom anytime from late spring to early/mid summer. The foliage has pointed leaves. It likes a situation ranging from light shade to full sun, though it may thrive best in a sunny position. It can be found in meadows and fields, even by ponds.
