Bistort
Persicaria Bistorta

Persicaria is an ancient name and it refers to the leaves being similar to those on a peach. Bistorta means to be doubly twisted or twisted twice. It may be known by the rather unattractive name of Snakeweed, due to the creeping nature of the root.

This perennial grows up to 3 feet in height. It blooms around late spring and then again at the end of the summer, possibly into early autumn. The flowers are pink to white and form in speared clusters on erect stems. The foliage is mid-green. Birds like the seeds.

It likes sun to partial shade. It can cope with relatively dry soil but flowers better if kept moist but not over watered. However, it does grow a little more freely if conditions are perfect so balance this to obtain some control.

In the wild, it can be found in open meadows. It has medicinal purposes and has been used as a vegetable: the leaves are edible when steamed. There is a recipe for Bistort or 'Herb' Pudding. It has been used to tan leather. It is one of the strongest medicinal astringents and has been used to treat haemorrhaging, jaundice, measles, cholera, diabetes and ulcers. It has also been used to gargle with for treating ailments of the mouth, including toothache. It has been used on insect bites and acne.
