Angelica
Angelica archangelica
Angelica is one of the taller herbs growing to a height of approximately 6ft. Stems are hollow and reddish-purple in colour. The leaves consist of separated 'leaflets' and are a bright green. The flowers are yellow-green and usually blossom around July. It has a pleasant odour.
This plant is a biennial meaning that it will die after flowering. To keep as a semi-perennial remove the flowers.
It likes a moist, rich soil, mostly in full sun with some semi-shade.
Leaves can be cut during the summer but gather the stems before the plant flowers. The plant is self-seeding but seeds can also be gathered for sowing.
Most parts of the plant can be used. Most commonly the stems are used candied. The leaves can also be used fresh or dried for storage and were used to make a 'brew' but this is not so customary. Also take care that you are growing the correct plant as hemlock can look similar and is poisonous!
Medicinally this plant has been used to remedy coughs and colds, colic and bronchial conditions, pleurisy etc., though it is not advisable for those suffering with diabetes.
