Sweet Basil is also often called Common Basil. This is classed as an annual plant but alas it does not always return the following year. However, if used for culinary purposes, the small price of purchasing a new plant each year will be worth it. It has a pleasant mild spicy taste and smell.

It grows approximately 1 to 2ft in height. It produces white flowers and likes full sun. It is best to grow under glass and is an ideal plant for a greenhouse or conservatory. Remove the flowers to promote maximum leaf growth.

Pick leaves as required and use in salads and cooking. Great in salads and tomato dishes, pasta recipes - the list is endless. Try using it to liven up a plain cheese sandwich!
