Allium schoenoprasum
Chives grow up to a 1ft in height in clumps of green leafy upright stalks. It produces purple flowers during the summer, which form in attractive ball-shaped clusters. However, remove the flowers to promote the best leaf growth.
It likes full sun. It is mildly aromatic. Can be grown in the garden or in a small pot even on a windowsill.
No herb garden is complete without chives even though botanically it is not classed as one. It is a member of the onion family and they have a light onion taste, great for salads and sandwiches and all culinary purposes. Cut leaves as required about an 1 inch from the base.
